So, when I left EGL to start the SEKO odyssey over 20 years ago I wasn't sure how it would turn out. I loved EGL, the people, the leadership were entrepreneurial and pretty visionary for the time and the team culture was great. It was warm, it was comfortable, it was a familiar jumper to wear. I loved the job, the people and I loved my office, It had a coffee machine and a sofa...I mean...wow right ?
However, when my friend Mark White told me (in a pub) about his idea to globalize an existing pretty small US freight business called SEKO Worldwide (er who?), starting in the UK, it was intriguing, and slightly nuts but it felt right. He has form. Good form. Smart bloke. Tempting. Then after spending some time (in pubs) with Keith Gaskin and Keith Obrien I was sold and it was time to leave the world of sofas and coffee machines and enter the world of shite offices and boxs for chairs ...and not a coffee machine in sight.
Fast forward 20 years, two private equity events later its time to move on, reflect, remember and above all be proud of what we helped shape. SEKO Logistics is now a very successful multi-billion dollar global enterprise. Mad to think where the "global" bit started....thats right... pubs.
Thousands upon thousands of hours on planes, turning right too (nightmare), hotel beds of vastly different quality, countless trips to Hong Kong, Chicago, Shanghai, New York, Indianapolis, Shenzen, LA, Holland, and Germany all the places that were important as we built out the start of a global company and grew our customer base in the UK. Starting as a hairy a**d forwarder and then adding the clever stuff as we went...
Always punching above our weight, never afraid to tackle a complex ask from a customer, never scared of the big boys and what they can do, we moved faster, we took chances, we had a story and we loved the customer to death. Always willing to invest time, effort, and energy for the "right" one - because we knew that they would stick if we looked after them, and stick they did. Believing in the tech we built in the early days, most of which would still make it today, believing in great account management and operators to execute the promises made and in great relationships with customers at every level. Many of those customers sold as far back as 2005, 2007 and onwards and some major names, big brands that you would know, are still with SEKO today, which is pretty special and shows that if the formula is right, anything is possible. So many stories, laughs, tears, late nights, early mornings, pubs, bars, dubious karaoke joints, airports, lounges, spare rooms, and worse - but above all so many special people, most still with us, some not so. Way too many to mention but they know who they are and the part they played in our journey. Exciting stuff to come in 2024 and more to follow on that soon but in the meantime...I will miss seeing these handsome devils every working day...legends.
