Just like driving, EVERYONE rates themselves as above average at HIRING. Here's the tea: most of us fall victim to bad hiring habits at some point: ✅ Resume graveyard you're going to review some day? ✅ Canned (or worse, spontaneous) interview questions? ✅ Hiring someone likable but ineffective?

Let's face it, hiring well is HARD. But what if you could upgrade your hiring skills and hire exceptional folks?

Here are 3 signs your interviewing might need a serious upgrade:

  • The "We're like a family" line. Yeah, okay, but families fight too. Focus on transparently communicating how work gets done, not clichés.
  • The black hole of applications. Candidates deserve communication, even if it's a polite "no thanks".
  • The "culture fit" obsession. Diversity of thought fuels creativity. Hire for skill and need (what's missing), not just a carbon copy of you or the existing team. Recent shift in focus: For the past 10+ years, I've honed my story-telling ability. A good skill, but I recently realized it misses the mark...

In reflecting on the best conversations - the most productive discussions... I'm realizing it's not because of compelling story-telling on my part. My new focus is asking better questions. Story-telling opens the door, but the quality of questions asked once the door is open advances outcomes so much further! Anyone else notice this? What else?
