David Haines

Head of Philanthropy at The University of Edinburgh

David J. Haines was the Head of Philanthropy, University Programmes at the University of Edinburgh from February 2019 to January 2023.3 In this role, his fundraising remit spanned major gifts for strategic priorities across the University, with a particular focus on widening participation.12

Haines started his fundraising career at youth charity Venture Trust before moving into Educational Advancement at the University of Stirling. Prior to joining Edinburgh, he worked at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, where he developed and launched their first comprehensive fundraising campaign, 'Change it. For good.'1

At the University of Edinburgh, Haines led the fundraising strategy for institutional initiatives, with a strong emphasis on Widening Participation programs.2 He worked to make the Widening Participation strategy more visible and better known to alumni and the wider community, encouraging more people to make potentially life-changing gifts to the university.2

Outside of work, Haines enjoys spending time on Scottish beaches with his young family.1 As of January 2025, Haines is no longer with the University of Edinburgh, as his LinkedIn profile indicates he left the position in January 2023.3
