David Hearnden

David Hearnden is currently a Distinguished Engineer at Canva, where his experiences also include roles as Chief Technology Officer and Technology Wrangler since November 2012.15 Before joining Canva, Hearnden worked as a Senior Software Engineer at Google from January 2008 to November 2012.1

Hearnden holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Software Engineering and a Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering from The University of Queensland.4 He also has experience as a Ph.D. student and Tutorial Assistant at the same university. Additionally, Hearnden was an intern at Sun Microsystems Laboratories in 2004 and a vacation student at DSTC in 2001.1

Melanie Perkins, the co-founder and CEO of Canva, spent a year trying to find her first technical hire. Eventually, Lars Rasmussen, the co-founder of Google Maps, introduced her to Hearnden, who was a senior engineer at Google at the time. Hearnden initially declined the offer to work at Canva, but later changed his mind.2 To convince Hearnden to join Canva, Perkins created what is known as the "Bizarre Pitch Deck," which helped him make the decision to leave Google and join Canva in 2012.2
