David Karoly

Leader, Earth Systems and Climate Change Hub, National Environmental Science Program at CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere

David Karoly is the Leader of the Earth Systems and Climate Change Hub in the Australian Government's National Environmental Science Program at CSIRO, and an honorary Professor at the University of Melbourne. He is a renowned expert in climate change and climate variability.

Professor Karoly has had significant contributions in the field of climate science, serving on various committees and advisory bodies related to climate change. He was a member of the National Climate Science Advisory Committee and the Climate Change Authority in Australia, and has played key roles in the Assessment Reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

His expertise encompasses climate science, climate dynamics, greenhouse climate change, climate variability, stratospheric ozone depletion, the Antarctic ozone hole, and climate modelling. He has been recognized for his contributions through memberships in prestigious scientific groups and accolades such as being elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and receiving the Royal Society of Victoria Medal for Scientific Excellence in Earth Sciences.

Prior to his current role, David Karoly held positions as a Professor at the University of Melbourne and the Williams Chair in the School of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma. He has a Doctor of Philosophy in Meteorology from the University of Reading and a BSc (Hons) in Applied Mathematics from Monash University.
