David Melton

Retired Attorney

David Melton is a retired attorney with over 30 years of experience in litigation, advocacy, and legal work.

He is passionate about advocating for small donor financing of elections, transparency in government, judicial reform, and civil liberties issues, particularly police oversight.

David has been actively involved in various organizations such as Reform for Illinois, the Coalition for Police Contract Accountability, the Chicago Justice Project, and Chicago Appleseed.

Earlier in his career, he focused on Intellectual Property litigation, accounting malpractice cases, corporate cases, and insurance coverage, as well as pro bono work on voter registration compliance.

David holds a Doctor of Law (J.D.) from the University of Chicago Law School, with a background in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

His professional background includes roles as Executive Director at Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, Senior Counsel at Foley & Lardner, and Partner/ Counsel at various prestigious law firms.
