Four attempts, four years of training that leads to four trips to outer space. What are you waiting fo(u)r with your dreams?
Astronaut Don Thomas grew up watching Neil Armstrong land on the moon, inspiring him to go after his own childhood dream. He put in work, went through three different one-hour NASA interviews in the hope of being selected. Three passes made him more determined.
The engineer, who was born and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, did the data analytics on past astronauts and what he or she had to make the cut. He moved and took a job at Johnson Space Center in Texas to better his odds, though he pretty much had decided he wasn’t likely going to achieve his dream.
Then the call came; you still interested? Thomas answered and in the midst of the failed Challenger mission that claimed the lives of seven astronauts, did the test flights, underwater drills and more. He became a mission specialist for one flight on space shuttle Discovery and three on Columbia.
Four missions, 692 trips around the earth and 44 days in space later, Thomas is retired but gives tours at the Kennedy Space Center and travels the world talking about his experience and mentoring those in international space programs. Going through the program all those years ago and knowing the risks involved, he says that if the chance of him making it back alive was 50/50, he would have still “done it in a heartbeat.” He had a dream and goal and nothing would stop him from breaching our atmosphere and looking through the shuttle windows at his home while cruising above it at 17,500 miles per hour.
Time is like that spacecraft zooming past; before you know it, you’ve seen countless sunrises and sunsets and plenty of years behind you. Don’t let fear or uncertainty slow or stop you from reaching for those stars. Be your own mission specialist and do your research of what it’ll take to get there, and flip that ignition switch.
