Fake #influencers are the bane of my existence. I'm so happy to see this law coming down the pike, and it's about time that people lying to consumers pay for their actions.

I predict this will hurt a HUGE amount of "influencers," - so if you're currently buying your engagement, likes, and follows...now is the time to stop. Well, the time to stop was before you started - but now is really the time to stop.

Buying fake followers and engagement is lying. Period.

Kudos to the #FTC.

When I started Social Impressions 13 years ago, social media was defined by the slow death of MySpace and the onset of #Facebook Business, Google+ (RIP), and the social network formerly known as #Twitter.

I was working with my first-ever client, Chipco Intl, the world's second-largest Poker Chip Manufacturer. The company's CEO, John Kendall, was a true visionary and took a risk when I told him we could reach more World Series of Poker Fans on Twitter when he hired me as a consultant, knowingly becoming my first-ever client.

Back then, we were focused on using clunky private forums to reach online communities, which had the bells and whistles of a printed TV Guide. 😂 We hustled to innovate, "failed fast and failed cheap," and luckily, we had the support of a brilliant and creative owner.

A lot has changed since then.

I see the onslaught of some amazing #AI tools that make everyone's life easier, and as long as #Marketers don't get lazy with them, they'll continue to enhance our relationship with our customers.

I thought of this as I cozied up to our Photobox this morning to take some pictures of our client's Aloe Juice - in the back of my head, I heard myself say, you could just do this with A.I. ....and I could.

A simple tool like Photoroom does an amazing job of creating beautiful product photos—truly, it does. I use it quite often. But what it doesn't do is give me the opportunity to touch my client's products over and over again as new ideas keep popping into my head, providing me with more content ideas.

Those new ideas popping into my brain like popcorn are why I love what I do and why I love helping businesses grow. A.I. is like the butter that sometimes makes the popcorn taste even better - but used too much and it makes the popcorn a bit soggy and inedible.

A critical meeting I attended when launching my company was led by Peter Shankman. It was one of his "#ShankMinds." We were in Boston at a table of roughly 11. It was there that he said something that I've never forgotten.

"Be one level above sucking."

He was partially joking - but also making a really great point. Marketers can get lazy when new tools launch that allow us to delve into the fortuitous exploration of the exciting new exploration of #AI (See what I did there? 😉) Peter's point, at least what I took from his statement, was that caring a bit more than the average person will make your work shine. Put in the effort and do what makes your heart beat faster.

I'm proud that at Social Impressions, we're still not lazy. Still going the extra mile. And still proudly serving clients who appreciate that extra effort. 💚
