David Rey

Research Hydrologist at U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)

David Rey is a Research Hydrologist in the Hydrologic Remote Sensing Branch of the Water Resources Mission Area at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).1 His specialty is in Arctic and alpine hydrology, but he has expertise in various field, geophysical, and numerical modeling methods.12

Rey's research focuses on:

  1. Evolving hydrologic systems in permafrost environments
  2. Linking snowmelt to streamflow in alpine ecosystems
  3. The impact of wildfire on groundwater and snow processes
  4. Development of UAS-based geophysical methods and systems for remote, autonomous geophysical monitoring1

He is currently contributing to the USGS WB, WAIEE, and NGWOS Water Mission Area Programs.1 Rey holds a Ph.D. in Hydrology from the Colorado School of Mines and a B.S. in Earth Science from Montana State University.1

His recent work includes testing ground-penetrating radar (GPR) mounted on a cableway over the Gunnison River in Colorado to map river bathymetry.1 Rey has also been involved in various research projects, including studies on permafrost, groundwater-surface water interactions, and the effects of wildfire on hydrologic systems.1
