You are cooking on a gas grill and run out of gas. You are enjoying a nice roaring fire in your fireplace on a cold winter night, but run out the wood. Burnout is when you run out of fuel.
In ancient times, one of the teachings of God was to have one day of the week as a sanctuary of Sabbath. This meant no work. It was a designated day to refuel.
Sabbath can be rest, recreation, and especially healthy relationships. Maybe there’s some chores involved, but not the entire day.
There are companies, teams, and even cities are testing for day work weeks instead of five days. Some of these tests are with 10 hours work days four days a week ,whereas others are simply the standard at eight hour workdays, and you work 32 hours instead of 40 hours.
The search is for balance instead of burnout. A “culture of sustainable creativity” is one benefit, but teams always achieve more long-term when individual members of the team feel valued, they trust leadership, and their lives have a reasonable work-life balance.
How’s the balance versus burnout scale tipped on your team?
