Joe DiMaggio once famously yelled at a journalist - “Don't you ever tell me that I'm a natural hitter again!”
He wasn't trying to be rude or abrasive, although admittedly, it's not the tact I would take as a remarkably amateur athlete. But that's an irrelevancy. What is relevant - and the point DiMaggio was making - was that by calling him a "natural," the journalist inadvertently undervalued a more important, and more accurate reality that led to DiMaggio's greatness.
👉 After clearly taking offense to the innocuous comment - Joe proceeded to show the Journalist thousands of tally marks in his basement. Each tally represented a deliberate practice swing - each with a subtle, yet intentional variation designed to improve his technique for hitting different pitches - fast balls, sliders, and curves. This was what made Joe DiMaggio great in his own eyes. In his own eyes - he wasn't a natural. In his own eyes - Joe had gained success through Deliberate Practice.
💡Deliberate Practice refers to a special type of practice that is purposeful and systematic. While regular practice might include mindless repetitions, deliberate practice requires focused attention and is conducted with the specific goal of improving performance.
Please don't misinterpret the point. I am certain that Joe DiMaggio was born with incredible gifts that contributed to his abilities. But even Joe recognized that while natural ability may be necessary - it is far from sufficient to be successful or considered one of the greatest.
James Clear says it brilliantly - "Deliberate practice does not mean that you can fashion yourself into anything with enough work and effort. While human beings do possess a remarkable ability to develop their skills, there are limits to how far any individual can go. Your genes set a boundary around what is possible.
However, while genetics influence performance, they do not determine performance. Do not confuse destiny with opportunity. Genes provide opportunity. They do not determine our destiny. It’s similar to a game of cards. You have a better opportunity if you are dealt a better hand, but you also need to play the hand well to win."
In business - some people are just dealt better hands. Maybe, genetically speaking, you are surrounded by individuals with higher aptitudes in Math or Science or Music. Or maybe - your teammates or higher-ups were fortunate enough to be a legacy at a prestigious institution. These are not things we can control.
🔑 What we can control is how we apply ourselves. Do not fall into the trap of mindless repetition! Follow the learnings of Joe - take thousands of intentional practice swings until you too can hit the fast balls, sliders and curves of your business -- whatever that means for you.
Because regardless of where we choose to apply ourselves, Deliberate Practice will help us maximize our potential—no matter what cards we were dealt.
