"Give me a place to stand, and a lever long enough, and I will move the world." - Archimedes (Pardon me while I adjust my soapbox.) The work we do impacts people. As much as we try to relate business decisions to companies and organizations, in the end, these decisions impact individuals in ways that improve or degrade the work they perform and, by extension, the success or failure of the company or organization. Whether you’re a software developer, a short-order cook, a professional athlete, or the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, the benefit you receive for the work you do, is derived directly from the impact it has on other people. It is always about people. We don't work to improve the bottom line. We don't work to get that big promotion. We don't work to be rich or famous. We don’t work to be the big tech entrepreneur bringing the next super-zoomy gadget to market. These outcomes are the hopeful results of the work we perform, not the purpose. We must think about the people we are working for and with. Our efforts need to bring a benefit to someONE else, not someTHING else. The purpose of our work is to raise everyone to their highest level of contribution, improving their own work and job satisfaction so that they can also work to improve the lives of others. It's not about doing more. It’s about doing the right things. Ask yourself, how am I improving the work for the worker, the life for the living? How am I reducing the stress of the stressed, the burden of the overburdened, the fear of the fearful? How is my work impacting the broadest number of people to get the maximum benefit for the smallest motion? This view of our work is essential for building our own success by aiding in the success of others. Kindness is your lever. Empathy is your fulcrum. These are your tools. Where will you stand to move the world? Get to work.
