We just launched My Ad Center — a new Google product that gives people control over what ads they see on Search, YouTube, Shopping and Discover. It’s now available to 10% of Google users (that’s over 300 million people!), with more to come over the next few weeks.
This release is the culmination of two years of work across dozens of teams in Google Ads. It’s been quite a ride, by far the most satisfying and challenging part of my experience at Google since I joined in mid-2020. It's a real zero-to-one — built by an incredibly dedicated team on a real mission.
We started with the observation that people like recommendations on commerce sites, streaming services, and news sites. These services all serve the same goal: exposing people to information, products, and services that they wouldn’t otherwise have heard of.
Ads are the same... but different. They can feel out of control - like something that happens to you, not something that’s done for you.
That’s where My Ad Center comes in. Control and comprehension go hand-in-hand. We’ve gone all-in on top-notch UX, clear presentation, and clear explanations. My Ad Center is a product designed for actual humans.
Which isn’t to say this is only about improvements to the user experience. My Ad Center required deep changes across multiple software stacks to take user-declared preferences into account when ranking ads. It also required significant changes to allow users to select preferred ad topics and brands (what people actually care about), versus targeting categories used by advertisers. And finally, it required changes to our privacy-enforcing systems to give users granular control over what data is used to personalize ads.
As it turns out, putting users in the driver seat, instead of “the algorithm”, is no small thing.
Many, many people across many organizations came together to make this product a reality. I know I’m missing at least 100 people. That said, congratulations to:
The “napkin sketch crew”: Breonna Danielle Rodriguez-Delgrosso, Pete Giencke, Josh Stickler
The “pitch-execs-and-push-a-massive-rock uphill" crew: Karin Hennessy, Derek Dunfield
The “let’s-validate-this-idea” crew: Sara Kleinberg, Sarah Michaux
The early supporters: Scott S, Caitlin Pantos, Mike Schulman, Rob Leathern, Tript Singh Lamba, Ronny Lempel, Elena Erbiceanu
The "make-it-real" crew: Bryant Chan, Girish Natarajan, Joerg Barfurth, Raj Hathiramani (he/him), David Vespe, Jonathan Herbach, Brian Park
The "tell-the-world" crew: Elijah Lawal, Tabitha B., Cameron Grace
Many thanks to Igor Perisic for helping steer us to a great landing. And finally — thank you to Jerry Dischler, who supported the product from the start — and when it was ready, served as its spokesman.
Finally, a hat tip to Sergey Brin who got an early, brief demo — and offered some good ideas that we can’t yet share 😀
