Highlights
Exciting news: I’m thrilled to share that I’m now the president-elect of the Institute of Designers in Ireland (IDI) and will officially take on the role in November 2024.
About IDI: Ireland’s largest cross-disciplinary design organisation, celebrating its 50th anniversary last year. We’re a member-led group, driven by dedicated volunteers (including the board and president) and a fantastic IDI staff led by CEO Charlotte Barker. A flavour of IDI’s work that I am excited about:
• Atlantic Tide; a project supporting design enterprise in the west of Ireland, collaborating with local government and businesses. • The development of a work-based learning framework linking industry and education, to bridge the gaps between theory and practice. • Launching (with the 100 Archive) the Design Declares Ireland initiative to declare a climate emergency and to respond accordingly (the first DD launch outside the UK).
Other IDI activities include: events; awards; graduate awards; partnerships with creative organisations internationally; climate and equality advocacy; community forums; training via the Design Skillnet, and so much more.
About me: I come from a graphic design background, with experience in independent studio practice, the advertising industry, and now as the Creative Director at Tines. I’ve also been fortunate to teach, write and lecture on design, and to contribute to the design community as a co-founder of the 100 Archive and in my time so far with the IDI.
Big thanks to current IDI President Mary Doherty for her nomination and to the IDI board for their support. I’m grateful for this opportunity to represent the IDI and its members.
This year, we’ve removed the special award for Sustainable Design from the IDI awards categories.
Instead of a standalone category with one winner, entrants across all categories are invited to show evidence of the principles and impact of sustainable design within their work. This approach recognises that sustainability is intrinsic to design excellence. It’s a modest change, but in my view an important one.
I’ve been involved in a broader review of all categories, with Dr Kevin Dowd and the input of a host of leading practitioners. In particular the support of Mary Doherty, Charlotte Barker, and the expertise of Stephen Ledwidge in devising sustainability criteria have been fantastic.
There’s just over a week left to enter, and I think this is going to be a great year to do so.
