Today, many of us will post in celebration of #mlkday2023 -- I hope to add another perspective to the conversation. Reading each post, we'll all nod in appreciation of what Dr. King achieved as our country suffered from deep division sixty years ago. But I'm hopeful we'll also see parallels to challenges we face today and draw strength from knowing that there is a path from despair to mutual respect and shared prosperity.
As a nation, our diversity spans more dimensions than ever. Sixty years ago, a battle raged over lack of equality. Our shared objective has evolved and expanded to into equity & inclusion across race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, geography, physical and cognitive ability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin and more.
The media tries to oversimplify the complexity of our society into binaries in every category. This highlights our differences and feeds conflict. Don't fall for it. Choose curiosity over ignorance.
