The Client's Guide to Agile: 9 Things Your Consultant Wishes You Already Knew

Clients sometimes get this wild idea that hiring an Agile coach is like waving a magic wand—poof—and their biggest business challenges will disappear. It’s a bit like that fancy software tool you bought last year, thinking it would single-handedly revolutionize your workflow. Spoiler alert: it didn’t, and neither will an Agile coach if you’re expecting them to do all the heavy lifting while you kick back and relax.

“Just call me when it’s done” is not a viable strategy.

So what does your consultant wish you knew? Let’s break it down and throw in a few examples:

1.     Leaders, Speak Up!—Or Your Strategy Will Get Lost in Translation 2.     Measure the Right Stuff—Focus on Value, Not Just Costs 3.     Move Blockers Out of the Way—Or Your Progress Will Be as Slow as Molasses 4.     You Have to be Willing to Change Your Organizational Structure—Align to Value or Risk Failure 5.     Buckle Up – This isn’t a Quick Fix 6.     Training Without Coaching Is Like Buying a Gym Membership and Never Going 7.     You Should Probably Hold Off on Buying New Tools Until You Figure Out Your Processes 8.     It Takes a Village—Don’t Underestimate the Need for a Team 9.     Who Will Own This After the Consultant Leaves? — Build In Sustainability from Day One

Two Common Product Strategy Problems

As an experienced agile engagement manager at ICON agility, I’ve seen a thing or two.

Let's talk a bit about Product Strategy and a couple of the challenges I see repeated again and again in our client environments. I've witnessed chaotic sprints that felt more like marathons and more than my fair share of product launches that required an extra shot of espresso to complete (aka 'heroic efforts' like long hours, extra development time...even weekends!) but let me tell you a secret: with the right product strategy, your business can go from “Oh no!” to “Let’s go!” in no time.

First off, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: Lack of Clear Product Vision. It’s like driving with a blindfold on. Without a well-defined product vision, your team can end up going in circles, wasting precious time and resources. Next thing you know, you’re stuck in a never-ending meeting trying to figure out why your product launch is delayed again. The business folks might have an understanding of what they want to do (hopefully), but somehow the message gets garbled when it finally lands with the teams responsible for executing that strategy.

Sound familiar?

Now, let’s address problem two: Inefficient Prioritization. Even if you have a great product vision and roadmap, if you can’t execute it well then in the end, does it really matter? Ever felt like you’re juggling a dozen balls while riding a unicycle? That’s what happens when prioritization goes wrong. Features pile up, scope creeps in, and your team ends up overextended and overwhelmed. Defects increase, predictability decreases, and milestones get missed. Don't even get me started on dependency management and proper story sequencing!   So what are some benefits of getting this right (or closer to right)?   An effective product strategy brings transparency and predictability to your business. Clear product vision and disciplined prioritization make it easier for your team to understand their goals and progress. No more guessing games. Well-defined roadmaps and efficient execution increase predictability, helping you deliver products on time and within budget. Now, who doesn’t love a predictable timeline?   Coaches, consultants and clients (both former, current and future) - what say you? Have you run into these issues before? Are they as common as I've seen them to be? What other common impediments have you tripped over? Lend me your thoughts.

If you've run into this in your travels (as I suspect you have) - would you like some help in navigating through these challenges? Let's start a conversation!
