My 2024 journey with a fresh mantra inspired by Tabitha Brown's "I Did a New Thing," continues. I've taken a bold leap into the realms of mathematics through MOOCs, enrolling in "Introduction to Mathematical Thinking" by Dr. Keith Devlin of Stanford University and "Principles of Applied Mathematics" by Professor Rodolpho Rosales via MIT Open Courseware.

You might ask why someone immersed in the world of business strategy would dive into applied mathematics. Well, contrary to what one might think, the connection between strategic thinking, business problem-solving, and math is not just relevant but quite profound.

My first assignment was not what I expected; it was a linguistic adventure, challenging me to clarify ambiguous sentences - a skill directly transferable to enhancing my writing and comprehension. In this context, math isn't just about numbers but about a way of thinking that enriches my understanding across disciplines.

Sidebar: In high school, I was a math enthusiast who took the Calculus Regents (in hindsight, a clear mistake on my part 😂), but this journey back to math has rekindled childhood dreams and sparked an unanticipated realization: STEM intersects with every facet of life, from strategy and calculations to fashion and fitness. We might have known this, but seeing it is something different and special, in my opinion.

With the last ten days of Q1 2024 upon us, I'm more excited than ever about this "new thing." It's a reminder that pursuing diverse interests not only fuels our enthusiasm but also reveals the interconnectedness of knowledge in unexpected ways.

Here's to #NewBeginnings, #MathInRealLife, and the thrill of discovering #UnexpectedConnections in 2024!  #LifelongLearning #StrategyMeetsMath #TabithaBrownInspired

This year, inspired by Tabitha Brown's wisdom, I embarked on a journey of self-improvement with my "I Did a New Thing" challenge, condensing it from every day for 30 days to once a month (a reasonable trade-off). My IDANT led me to enroll in a basic sewing class—a skill I never learned before. Today's lesson: darts.

For context, before today's lesson, I was top of the class excelling with basic stitch types.  But today... today took an entirely different turn as I faced the intricacies of the dart intake method. It was an experience that brought me face-to-face with the unexpected application of math and science in everyday life.

Darts, as it turns out, are not just fashion elements; they're geometric marvels. They give a three-dimensional curve to a flat surface, embodying the principles of geometry. As an honors student (am I bragging much?) math was one of my favorite subjects except for geometry...geometry was my struggle. And for a subject I purposely avoided and never thought I’d ever face again, today’s challenge hit a sore spot.

Reflecting on my past experiences, particularly my ninth-grade frustrations with geometry in Mrs. Weinstein's class, I'm reminded of the omnipresence of math and science, often surfacing when we least expect it. Despite my previous challenges, this sewing class has deepened my appreciation for the intersection of art and science, especially in fashion design.

The takeaway? Embrace the unexpected challenges and opportunities that come your way, even when they threaten to turn your IDANT into an I CAN’T moment. They may unearth old wounds but also provide valuable insights and appreciation for the world around us. So here's to embracing new experiences and discovering the beauty of geometry in unexpected places. Pop culture got it wrong, it's really "Geometry rocks!"
