Déana Scipio is a dedicated researcher focusing on broadening participation in STEM for underrepresented communities.

Her work centers on redefining participation in STEM by emphasizing inclusion and equitable opportunities for all learners.

As a design-based researcher, Déana has crafted and evaluated learning environments in both formal and informal settings, with a focus on equitable design and community-university partnerships.

During her PhD at the University of Washington, she managed Project COOL, a program uniting diverse groups to engage in chemical oceanography research.

Déana's experience spans various roles in informal education, ranging from science teaching to environmental education and facilitation in research projects.

She holds a PhD in Learning Sciences and Human Development, an M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction, and certificates in environment and education.

Currently, Déana serves as the Director of Graduate & Higher Education Programs at IslandWood, with a diverse background that includes postdoctoral fellowships, coordination roles, and teaching positions.

Her specialties include design-based research, learning sciences, STEM curriculum development, environmental education, and large group facilitation.

Déana's educational journey took her through the University of Washington and the University of San Francisco, where she studied English Language and Literature and Biology.

Her career has seen her contribute to various organizations, including TERC, Passages Northwest, and Aim High, among others.
