Highlights
The last time I was mic'd up for speaking on-stage was for a high school speech tournament. It's such an honor to do this again for work nearly fifteen years later, at the Partner Summit Lightening Talk theater at #GoogleCloudNext!
Public speaking is intimidating for anyone, and I wanted to share my thoughts on how to fight those pre-stage jitters. Like, what if my topic isn't interesting and people get bored? What if I stumble my words and don't remember what to say? I think we've all been there.
I try to dismiss these fears and redirect my attention to:
🙋🏻♀️ Make it about the audience, not about you. Instead of reading speaker notes or memorizing, how do I talk casually and to-the-point as if I'm making a point with my family or friends? Kudos to Kayla Spiess for giving me this tip years ago during webinar practice.
🧩 Where can I better understand the audience? Especially with business topics people's mileage can vary so I love it when speakers start with polls or a show of hands.
❓Q&A is a highlight, not a chore. This is a rare opportunity to learn what people are curious about. A great time to make things spontaneous and fun!
Lastly, I think of every speaking opportunity as learning and it doesn't need to be perfect. I always think about how comedians get up on stage over and over again to hone their craft, even if that means on some nights, jokes fall flat or if they really suffer. Apparently Bill Hader used to suffer from so much anxiety and panic attacks while performing live on SNL that he had to seek help! So if even someone naturally gifted like Bill can be scared, then we can all give ourselves a bit of grace. 🙂↕️ #publicspeaking #motivation #googlecloudpartners #inspiration
That's a wrap on #GoogleCloudNext '24! It's been a whirlwind meeting so many partners and coworkers in-person (when we're usually calling in from different offices).
Big congratulations to my teammates Erin Simone Elizabeth L. Julien Renucci for organizing an incredible partner experience, I'm still in awe of the scale of everything you've pulled off! My boothmates for being so diligent and thorough on answering questions from our partners Beau Hertensteiner Brent Gostkowski Abella Kahane Amy Bray Brooke Lacock-Nisly
Also thanks to everyone who came to support me during my first preso at Next! Lil personal milestone🙂↕️🎤 I learned many of my coworkers are great stage moms (taking photos of me and pumping me up).
