I don't come from a culture that encourages long periods away from work. My early career role models were '80s and '90s North American business leaders who, and I'm making a broad simplification here, generally encouraged working as long and hard as you could to beat someone else to a promotion.

It took me years to identify what didn't feel right about that, but I have been deliberate about living and working differently since I found clarity. A big part has been systematically changing how and when I work and freeing myself to take time when needed, whether a few hours, days, weeks, or, most recently, two months. With planning and transparent communication, I can let go so I return refreshed, energized, and excited to give my all again…. which is precisely how I feel this week as I settle into my new home office after wrapping up our eight years in Germany and getting to know our new home city of Austin.

My husband and I took four weeks of our time off for a self-planned, self-supported bike-packing adventure across the Czech Republic, Germany, and the Netherlands, reaching the Baltic and Atlantic. We called it our 'Transition Tour' and finished many of the trails and routes we started during our years there. You discover a lot about yourself on your bike for so many hours every day, often in absolute peace and solitude. Some of the random thoughts that surfaced for me include:

  • Nature is amazing.
  • Travel far enough, and you meet yourself.
  • Doing hard things reminds me I can do hard things 😂.
  • The difference between an ordeal and an adventure is attitude.
  • I feel so incredibly grateful.

I'm diving back into work I love with people I admire and appreciate, and I am ready to take on new projects (maybe with you?). I hope you also have opportunities to refresh, rejuvenate, and connect!

My recent thesis research, starting a company, and deepening my facilitation and coaching practice have given me time to consider and focus on what genuinely matters to me - good health, deep connections, and living a purpose-filled, values-led life on my terms rather than social norms.

With this in mind, we've decided to leave a part of the world we've loved and called home for eight years to move closer to our family. We're saying our 'see you agains' here in Europe and will land in Austin, TX, USA, in mid-July to find a new home in time to reopen our offices the week of July 29. But first, we're planning a grand adventure to wander where the wi-fi is weak, the coffee is strong, and the bike paths are endless.

I'm grateful for meaningful work and opportunities to take breaks to reflect and renew. I'll check in as I can. In the meantime, I wish you well. Take good care.
