Purpose is the BluePrint - We are the Builders Some of the most rewarding and meaningful work I have done in my career, is developing and conducting our BECU Purpose Workshops.
As I slowly gear up for the 7th session in a year & a half, I am fueled by the generosity of spirit of those who care deeply about what’s possible - when we lean into our Purpose.
We spend 3 days (well 2 half days and one full day), exploring our foundations rooted in cooperative principles and BECU Purpose.
We step away from the hustle and bustle, and step outside ourselves for a moment, to test other perspectives, we explore our own vulnerability and we lean into empathy - all centered around the polarities that cooperatives uniquely balance. And together we walk away with a renewed sense of self, purpose, community and commitment to do the hard work of doing good. All while balancing business needs with making a difference towards people’s journey to financial health.
Magical things happen when people get together and talk about what matters, what learning new perspectives teaches us, and what unites us in Purpose - even in the face of many polarities to balance.
I’ve seen people come feeling a bit broken and weary of what is next, maybe overwhelmed with to dos, or just cautiously curious and leave with a pep in their step, a renewed sense of their role in today and tomorrow - and a sense of deepened community - in that it takes a cooperative village. That Purpose isn’t just words on a PowerPoint or plaques on a wall - that Purpose isn’t just leaders responsibility. That purpose is up to all of us. And I think they leave excited to be a more intentional part of this journey. And they become champions of what’s possible.
It’s true there is limited space in each session, but I can already see some of the intangible ripple effects. And the resolve of these intentional builders of our purpose. And there is an intentional mix of areas, roles, levels and tenure. As we all learn more when we vary the perspectives. And each of us - have a sphere of influence and can make a difference.
Huge thank you and credit to my co-collaborator and co-presenter, the amazing Chad Helminak (and shout out to the National CU Foundation for early iterations and support) and all the supportive champions who bring their gifts and energy and wonderful talents to move this all forward. I am a team of one on paper and a team of so many more in reality: Arnessa Belin, M.S., CUDE Bodhi Severns Deborah Donnelly Jennifer Hansen Jill Vicente Joan Geraghty Natasha R. Patti Thibodeaux Rafael Saucedo, CUDE Sacheen Winston Verity Swearingen Kyle Jung Steve Harrington III (Shout out to Martin Vallen & Charlie Sy) And many more…
And the 220+ official Purpose Champions at BECU who continue to spread what’s possible. This coupled with so many already deeply dedicated purpose driven colleagues and leaders at BECU - it is exciting to see what differences we continue to make.
