In this episode of Hidden Forces, I speak with Jeffrey Sachs, a world-renowned economist, educator, and critic of the so-called ‘Deep State’ and its role in shaping U.S. relations towards Moscow since the end of the Cold War.

Dr. Sachs last appeared on Hidden Forces in late June to discuss his criticisms of the U.S. intelligence community and American foreign policy. I asked Dr. Sachs back on the podcast to continue our conversation, this time with a focus on understanding the causal forces responsible for the breakdown in US-Russia relations and the War in Ukraine.

Dr. Sachs and I discuss much of the relevant post-Cold War history, including NATO enlargement, the breakdown in arms control, and the invasions of Georgia and Ukraine. I also challenge some of his views about who is to blame for the current state of affairs, which leads to a very lively and enlightening conversation.

Investigative journalist and author of "Means of Control" Byron Tau joins me on Hidden Forces to discuss the details of a hidden surveillance system forged between tech companies and the US government that can peer into the lives of nearly everyone on the planet.

In the first hour of our conversation, Byron and I discuss how, in the years after 9/11, the U.S. government, working with scores of anonymous companies, built a foreign and domestic surveillance apparatus by outsourcing the construction of this surveillance state to the private sector.

In the second hour, we explore the near-term implications of this surveillance state for American democracy, personhood, and freedom.

We discuss:

(1) The role of TikTok and other foreign companies and actors that are able to access this same data marketplace.

(2) The role of agent provocateurs and how location-based applications can be used to foment riots and manipulate people into mobs and other forms of collective action.

(3) The role of prominent voices on the American Right and what they leave out when discussing censorship in media.

(4) How much the current system resembles the concept of "precrime" in the film "Minority Report," and what this implies about human agency and freedom in the digital age.

(5) What can be done through legislation and regulation to restrain government agencies and private companies operating in the surveillance economy and what you can do on a personal level to mitigate these entities’ and actors’ access to your private life.
