Hi folks! I want to take a moment to talk about the search for meaningful work while trying to care for your mental health.

Last year, I was working at three companies and balancing a six-days-a-week schedule, editing videos for a cable news channel, a lifestyle YouTube channel, and an online news podcast. It was a lot to manage, but I felt blessed to be doing exciting creative work. Then in March, one of my cats developed cancer and had to be euthanized. The YouTube channel decided to use my bereavement day as an opportunity to tell me not to return. A few weeks later, the podcast decided to pivot away from video and laid me off as well. Left with only my weekend job editing news, I began searching for new opportunities.

I tried to remain optimistic that a new chapter of my life was just around the corner. The reality was that I was deeply anxious and depressed. Every few weeks, a new interview request would pop up in my email inbox and the thrill of new possibilities would swell my heart. I had what I thought were great interviews with a lot of exceptional folks who work at some of the top companies in media. Then a few weeks later, they would send a rejection email.

All this was set against the backdrop of friends getting married and growing up, as the preciousness of being alive on this earth became more and more apparent. It felt like my hourglass was rapidly running out of sand.

Paradoxically, it was this realization of life’s painful brevity- plus the unwavering support of my wife Leesa- that pulled me from the brink. There is much to explore and enjoy on this planet, and even things like a walk through the park or a really good piece of bread can be beautiful reminders of what it means to be human. My existence is not defined by how much money I make or what my job title is. I know that one day I will be seen by a potential mentor or employer the way that my friends and loved ones see me: I work hard, I love to laugh, I love to create, and I refuse to give up!

So what have I been up to since last year? -I got my NYC Sightseeing Guide License, leading to a job with Scott’s Pizza Tours (a dream for pizza lovers like me!). After training on tandem tours for a few months, I finally hosted my first solo tours in June. -Led a Nintendo Switch E-Sports after-school program at a NYC middle school -Wrote and analyzed AI prompts for Outlier, working freelance on a project to refine an LLM -Did some freelance video editing work for a branded content company -Edited an episode of a podcast for Vibrent Health -Enrolled in a UX Design course on Coursera -Babysat my adorable new nephew <3

I’m still looking for that dream job where I can use my skills to edit, write, and produce content that makes an impact on people’s lives, and I’m confident that one day I’ll get there. I’d be so curious to hear about other people’s career journeys, how they found their path and overcame setbacks. For now, I am just trying to find joy in everything I do!
