Proud to share the outcomes of our recent youth-led initiative focused on shaping the futures of East and Southern Africa and supported by International Development Research Centre (IDRC). Through more than 36 youth futures literacy workshops, young people developed new ways of anticipating the future and gained critical skills for engaging with policymakers, as evidenced in their authored policy briefs as published by South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) in conjunction with project partner Southern Africa Node of The Millennium Project.

The youth reframed orientation to multiple open futures and co-created systemic innovations emphasised urgent climate action, youth leadership development, sustainable economies, digital and financial literacy, mental health, and the importance of humanistic values like Ubuntu. This work highlights the essential role of foresight-informed youth in policy processes and the power of their insights in creating just societies. Excited to see where the next phase of youth-driven initiatives will lead! #YouthFutures #PolicyInnovation #Sustainability #foresight #futures #youth

I had the honor of presenting our research on "Youth and Social Justice Futures in East and Southern Africa" at the UNESCO-Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University (PMU) Symposium 2024 in Dammam, Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia.

The theme was "Priority Youth: Futures and Foresight for Inclusive Decision-Making." Thank you to UNESCO Chair in Futures Research, Epaminondas Christophilopoulos, PhD who helped steer the conversation and the UNESCO Futures Literacy and Foresight team Christine Kavazanjian, Léa Chaussis, Kushal Sohal who helped organise this impactful symposium.

The paper presented delves into the rapid societal changes in East and Southern Africa (ESA), focusing on youth skills and social justice needs to re-imagine youth futures and promote youth-led action research. Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/dM9hvk_W or here: https://lnkd.in/dX3PEcVE

Key Highlights: 🔍 Co-exploring anticipatory systems and skills needs with youth to inform and advocate for action with decision-makers. 🤝 Empowering youth as co-creators of knowledge and policy, with a focus on transformative action and adaptive learning for societal justice. 💡 Creating inclusive spaces like Youth Futures Labs (YFLs) for collective intelligence and advocacy.

The research ensured comprehensive dialogue across Zambia, South Africa, Malawi, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. This involved 36 youth futures labs, multiple strategy and agenda-setting workshops, a regional workshop, advisory meetings, and a youth advocacy training workshop.

The Research Emphasised Re-framed Youth Futures: ☂ Youth as futures literate and aware of anticipatory assumptions 🌱 Youth as changemakers for transformative action 🌀 Youth as adaptive learners for societal justice 📜 Youth as co-creators of knowledge and policy

Thank you to my esteemed colleagues for their invaluable contributions and helped made the research possible: Geci Karuri-Sebina, Sophia Bazile, the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) Futures Programme team Letitia Jentel, Litha Lethu Mzinyati, Ndeapo Wolf, all the youth researchers and youth participants for their dedication and insights, and our youth partners MIET AFRICA and Twaweza East Africa
