I’m going to Miss USA!!!
In 2021, I made a life-changing decision to leave my comfort zone and try a new experience - PAGEANTRY!
It was different from anything I had known. I was fascinated and wanted to understand why pageantry appealed to so many women around the world. After 1.5 years in the industry, I found a major reason.
The process of getting ready for a pageant competition is quite unbelievable and it is anchored on core skills and attributes that researchers have found in strong leaders some of which include - resilience, commitment, strategy, diligence, collaboration, vision building, public speaking, and so on.
The world doesn’t really see the process and we are used to seeing the beautiful end result on the stage - bright lights, stunning dresses, well made up faces.
Pageantry is more than meets the eye and I am thankful to have given myself the opportunity to understand this.
On Sunday, March 19 2023, I had the honor of being crowned the 2023 Miss New Jersey USA while breaking some historical barriers:
- I am the 1st Nigerian-American to hold the title
- Based on research so far, first Wall Street professional to be crowned
- The last time a Black woman was crowned was in 2010 and 13 years later, this history has now changed
I am a definition of embracing new dreams (I didn’t grow up doing pageants - I started in 2021!) and giving it your all!
Here’s your friendly reminder that your dreams are valid and you need to put in the work to realize them.
Thank you to JPMorgan Chase & Co. J.P. Morgan Private Bank for being a support system throughout my journey and making room for me to shine my light within and outside of work. A special shout out to Alma DeMetropolis, CFA, CFP® who was the first leader I shared my initial invitation to compete with back in 2021 and all I remember her saying was “you have to go for it.” Your unwavering support has propelled me to the path of greatness and this is only the beginning.
I am excited for this opportunity and I invite you all to join me on my #roadtomissusa journey!
