His professional experience ranges from being an Associate Professor to roles as a Senior Adjunct Faculty, Genomic Technologist, Technical Specialist, and Molecular Diagnostics Technologist.
In addition, Derek has contributed to organizations like ALS Environmental and York College of Pennsylvania in various laboratory and technician roles.
Highlights
It’s been in the works for quite some time. But now that the semester has started, I’m happy to share that I’ve started my PhD in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at George Mason University!
The past 14 months have been something.
It was only 2 days after losing my father that I interviewed for this program. Afterwards, I kept thinking “I was certainly not myself…how could they admit me?”. But they did. They saw my drive and my passion to deviate from my comfort zone.
Then, just four months later—during exam week for Markets & Economies—it was my father’s mother who passed. Still, I kept pushing.
Looking back, however, I’ll remember this as also the time I bought my first house. And when I learned more about myself and my career path than I thought I would.
Late nights lying in bed studying before early-morning alarms. Weekends composing case studies and—towards the end—a capstone project. A schedule that simultaneously flew by while also seeming to take forever to complete. These are all items I no longer need to worry about.
If you’ve been following my journey thus far, I appreciate your support and encouragement. If not, my journey at Quantic School of Business and Technology has been quite an adventure. And while I completed the requirements for my degree, did I mention that I can continue to complete specializations that get added in the future as part of an alumni benefit?
Education should not be relegated to the classroom, and certainly not the modern MBA. For anyone thinking about returning to school or learning more about topics they are unfamiliar with, having the flexibility to complete an MBA on your smartphone—something we seem to have perpetually bound to our hip—is a great way to start. If this scientist-who-had-never-taken-a-business-course-before person can do it, you can too.
