Some people think good research means pulling together as much information as possible on a given subject.

When in reality good research means learning the required information based on the objective at hand.

And then communicating that learning back in a way that can be easily understood and absorbed by whoever needs to benefit from the knowledge.

Where I see so many strategic research projects fail is by executing on number one (gather as much info as possible) at the expense of numbers two and three (focus on the objective and simple, clear communication of the results).

Why does this happen? First, to justify the high price tag of the research. The thinking here is that a bulk of findings will appear impressive and worth the investment.

Second, because in order to execute on focus and communication you need to deeply understand the objective and the actual findings. This is hard, personally-exhausting work. And like with any industry - the hard work will tend to be neglected in favor of the easy work if at all possible.
