Derek Vaz is a seasoned designer and technologist with over fifteen years of experience in defining connected products and services. In 2018, he founded an independent research and experience design practice called DVXD, working with a network of designers, engineers, and analysts to empower organizations in creating integrated social and business value. Derek has collaborated with notable organizations such as Google's News Initiative, Indigo, and Rappler. Previously, he founded and led the Experience Design team at Huge Toronto, where they tackled complex product, brand, and business challenges for clients like Four Seasons, Nike, and TELUS. That was the straight up advice I got from my team when I suggested I might get some work in on my time off. Instead I took their advice and am returning to work after truly being shut off, disconnected from anything work related and most importantly, fully in trust that everything is humming at DVXD.
As an owner operator, fighting the anxiety that comes with opening the floodgates to emails and Slack messages used to be the norm. But that’s been softened knowing a couple of catchup chats and a sorted list of priorities await me when I return.
Investing in systems and processes to keep things organized is worth it. Do it. But investing in great people who you can entrust your business to should always come first.
