While there is a lot of talk about the impact worker misclassification has on ride-sharing and food deliver, we hardly hear anything about the impact it has on healthcare. But the Department of Labor is taking notice, cracking down on healthcare facilities as it pertains to compliance with contract labor and overtime pay laws.

Staffing nurses under a 1099 contractor model means that the nurse is not afforded some of the basic things that we should all enjoy as workers, such as overtime wages and health benefits. But it also means that healthcare facilities are taking on the liability of an under-insured nurse.

Both scenarios add up to a working situation for nurses that negatively impact the quality of care that we and our loved ones receive.

This is the reason why IntelyCare exclusively employs our nurses as W2. So that we can provide the things they need to thrive in their career - benefits, training, credentialing, education, and insurance. And so that we can protect our facility partners from worker misclassification risks. 1099 staffing agencies cannot legally do any of these things, and the Department of Labor agrees.

If you'd like to learn more, check out this article at MedCity News featuring some insight from Dane Steffenson, a former trial attorney at the DOL.

“I think it’s very difficult to have a person working in a healthcare facility and not have them be a W-2 worker. That facility is facing liability if they choose to do that."

While Jeff changed the world forever, it was his leadership that impacted so many of us.

I remember sitting in our dumpy office above the Sampan Restaurant in Framingham and Jeff told the eleven employees that for every person to our left and right of us, there would be seven more people by the end of the next year. He was wrong only because it was more like 15 each.

I recall Jeff’s leadership on the morning of 9/11. He immediately understood the gravity of the situation and world we would be living in. He made one of the most passionate speeches and provide sanity during that chaotic moment.

Jeff’s passion and positive attitude were always present. He inspired people to do their best and think outside the box. You could work hard and have fun at the same time.

He is one of the truly outstanding leaders I have been fortunate to work for during my career. At Monster, I would add Jocelyn and Pog to that list of my bosses who had a huge impact on me and thank them.
