Here at the National Press Club hearing from Stanford Vice President of External Relations Martin Shell as our alumni group discusses with him some of the current challenges & opportunities for our campus.
Appreciate our school for having open conversations with alumni, even when subjects can get kind of touchy!

He hates public recognition so he’ll hate that I posted this, but everybody deserves to know - Capitol Hill & our country are so lucky to have Harden Spencer as a ceaseless advocate for a better world.
I’ve had the pleasure to work with Harden for the last 5 years in Rep. Cleaver’s office, and in that time I’ve had the pleasure to call him my supervisor, my colleague, my roommate, and my friend.
In a career where it can be easy to become cynical, both about the purposes of public service & the processes by which we do our work, Harden has always been somebody who doesn’t take “good enough” as an answer. For me, he’s always been a moral standard by which to measure my actions. He’s also always been happy to innovate our approaches to try to be more productive and that productivity strives only to build a better future for those who need the help of government the most.
For the last couple years, we’ve served as “Legislative Director” & “Deputy Legislative Director”, but in practice we worked as partners, holding each other accountable and always pushing the other to be the best version we can be. For 5 years, we’ve sat side by side working to represent the good people of Missouri’s Fifth Congressional District. And it’s been the greatest working relationship of my professional life.
Tomorrow, Harden starts a new chapter. But the impact he’s made on our team, our District, and me personally cannot be overstated.
Love you, brother. You’ve always got a teammate in me.
