I was diagnosed with ADHD in sixth grade. Anyone who grew up with me knew I was the girl who couldn’t keep up in school. I was social, I was an athlete, I looked people in the eyes, and smiled a lot. At that time, kids, especially girls, were not diagnosed. But I was drowning. I remember sitting in class and trying to hear what the teacher was saying through the constant noises in my head. Imagine changing the channels on the TV and every channel was static and loud—that was my brain. I can’t count the number of times my parents lost their temper with me as I tried to understand. I was ‘careless’, I was ‘not focusing’, I was ‘lazy’.

At one point, my parents were told I likely would not graduate high school, and I definitely would not go to college. It took my parents nearly 4 years to get someone to listen and get me in front of the right professional. Once I was diagnosed, I got into Support classes, and was given ongoing evaluations and an IEP- it took a beat for my brain to catch up, but once it did, it changed my life. That being said- I still walked with the belief that I wasn’t enough, that I would never keep up, and that I was.…dumb.

I wish someone told me… that my diagnosis was not all bad. I wish someone told me that I might see the world differently than others or consume information in a unique way, but that does not make me stupid or less than. I wish someone told my parents that my learning would be frustrating, but not because I wasn’t trying or careless. I wish someone told me that I could still do great things and make my mark, and my ADHD would actually become one of my greatest strengths.

As I am onboarding for my dream job, I cannot stop thinking of the kids who are drowning. I want their parents, and more importantly, them, to know a learning disability does not mean you are stupid. It does not mean that you should stop dreaming. Learning disabilities just mean we don’t fit in the box that is our education system… it means you are exceptional. Keep going, learn how YOU learn best, and trust yourself. There is a space for us. No one can do what I do, and it is because of the way I see the world. As I get older, I am starting to believe that we are the lucky ones <3

...here and ready to share my story with anyone who needs to hear it.
