Highlights
It was a pleasure to be a part of IMC Chamber Of Commerce and Industry (IMC) seminar on ‘Making Mumbai Future Ready - The Sustainable Way’ to address the financial opportunity in sustainability. -With a growing economy targeting to reach USD 300Bn in GDP by 2030, a population of over 21 Mn people and rising pollution levels with AQI as high as 171, Mumbai needs to prioritize sustainable transportation, efficient waste management & water supply, and urban planning which hold great financial opportunities. -The city produces over 6500 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste daily. With 3 Dumping ground sites in Deonar, Mulund and Kanjur Marg which have reached full capacity. Deonar landfill is in use for 90+ years and has ~12 Mn tonnes of accumulated waste in 120 hectares. However, the city currently has only 1 waste to energy (WTE) plant in Deonar, scheduled to be commissioned in October 2025 to process 600MT of waste daily and generate 4 MW of electricity daily at a high cost of INR 648 cr. To give perspective, a Dubai WTE plant processes 5600 tons of waste per day to generate 215 MW energy at a cost of USD 1 Bn. There is a massive opportunity to efficiently utilise capital to build profitable WTE plants at scale. -As per World Bank, India is endowed with 4% of the total available freshwater while hosting 18% of global population, making it one of the most water-stressed regions in the world. As of 2023, BMC supplies ~3,900 MLD of water daily against a demand of ~4,500 MLD. Mumbai tanker water rates are as high as INR 250-300 per KL while BMC rate for residential water supply is INR 6 per KL. Desalination as a reliable and consistent water source is crucial for a coastal city, with favourable unit economics. -With ~5 Mn vehicles on road this year and a 1.5% annual population growth, road usage is bound to increase. Operating electric busses is 6 times more capital efficient than the metro, taking into account the total expenditure vis-à-vis total passengers carried per day. Electrifying Mumbai with mass shared e-mobility is crucial to create energy security, reduce air pollution with zero tail pipe emissions and alleviate traffic congestion. -Mumbai Vision 2035 focuses on urban redevelopment, infrastructure improvement and green spaces. With this, Mumbai is poised to undergo redevelopment for the next 20 years. There is a unique opportunity to follow Singapore's Landscape Replacement Area (LRA) policy, where green spaces are set aside equivalent to the land built upon. Encouraging the planting of vertical & terrace gardens ensuring sustainable development and is financially beneficial to the city, citizen & developer. Let's seize this moment and work towards a greener, more resilient Mumbai! #Sustainability #Mumbai #FutureReady #GreenEconomy #SustainableDevelopment
India's industrial sector currently relies on 90 gigawatts of fossil fuel-based captive power. Imagine the transformative impact if this energy demand could be sustainably met through renewable sources. This shift would unlock new investment opportunities and propel us towards our global climate goals.
With the EU moving towards carbon tariffs on exports, Indian companies are increasingly prioritising sustainability, including the adoption of green steel production. Leading conglomerates are now strategically investing in renewable energy to meet their internal power needs. This significant shift reflects a growing commitment to environmental responsibility and enhances global competitiveness.
