From the day I took swimming as a sport seriously, I have always come across professionals using the Speedo accessories.
Do you know the story behind the iconic swim brand Speedo?
Founded in 1914 under the name 'Fortitude', Speedo traces its roots back to a young Scot named Alexander MacRae, who ventured into the Australian business landscape with MacRae Hosiery manufacturers. As beach culture surged in Australia, MacRae swiftly expanded into swimwear, renaming the company to MacRae Knitting Mills.
The turning point came in the 1920s when swimming gained popularity as a sport, leading MacRae to introduce the groundbreaking Racerback costume. This innovative design, allowing for greater mobility and speed, earned the brand its iconic name in 1928 when a staff member gave the slogan 'Speed on in your Speedos'.
Throughout the 1930s, Speedo's swimwear garnered attention for its style and performance. It made waves at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1932 when Australian swimmer Claire Dennis clinched gold.
The 1936 Berlin Games marked another milestone as the entire Australian Men's swim team sported Speedo, solidifying its association with competitive swimming.
Today it's clear to see the impact that Speedo, under the Pentland House of Brands, has made. The brand's dedication to innovation and promoting a healthy lifestyle through swimming is truly inspiring. With initiatives like the 'Get Speedo Fit' campaign, they're not just selling swimwear but they are also encouraging people to embrace the joy of swimming and stay active.
Behind Speedo's success lies the solid support of Pentland, providing a strong foundation for their growth. And with their latest financial report showing €106 million in revenue, it's evident that Speedo continues to lead the way in the swimwear market.
The swimwear market in India is booming, currently valued at a whopping US$2.17 billion. Thanks to India's expanding middle class and growing interest in fitness, there's a big demand for sports and swimwear.
Experts predict this market will keep growing steadily at 3.50% annually (CAGR 2024-2028). Decathlon is leading the pack, with its brand Nabaiji snagging 15% of the market share.
Now, I'm curious: What's your favourite swimwear brand?
