Myth-busting operation is on! 🩸 Reproductive care, menstrual, and hormonal health are often surrounded by misconceptions, inherited beliefs, and sometimes disinformation.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been reading 𝘉𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥 by Dr. Jen Gunter, and it’s been enlightening on many levels:

→ “Menstrual blood” is actually only 50% blood🩸 The rest is cervical mucus and vaginal discharge.

→ It’s the first time I’ve seen illustrations of how the reproductive tract develops in a fetus 🤯

→ I was under the impression that we could “read” our menstrual blood, but apparently, the color doesn’t indicate anything (so light red or pink spotting doesn’t reveal anything about estrogen levels).

→ Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) got a few headlines recently (and it’s important to know what it is), but it also happens rarely. You’re more likely to be struck by lightning than to develop TSS.

→ I thought the speculum was another torture instrument created by Dr. Sims (you know, the one who operated on enslaved women. Three of them were named Lucy, Betsy, and Anarcha), but the classic bivalve speculum, the system we know today, was actually invented by a French midwife, Marie Boivin. She was described as “one of the wisest midwives and the truly most medical woman of modern times.”

→ I’ve learned so much about the etymology of some substances and hormones, and many of them could use a renaming! For instance, prostaglandins are named because we once thought they came from the prostate, but they’re present in menstruating people and are involved in period💩. Estrogens come from a Greek word that has several meanings, including “sexual season” or “madness.” 🙄

I like Dr. Gunter’s sass, the work she does for true accurate information and how she approached these topics through her personal experiences.

Her critiques are quite refreshing, even if they can sometimes feel harsh. She’s particularly skeptical of information circulating on social media, the supplement industry, fear-mongering about chemical presence, the use of “natural” in marketing products like menstrual items, or the unregulated accreditation that allows for a loose definition of what a “period coach” is.

Certain holistic approaches are completely dismissed due to a lack of solid studies backing them up… while her book is all about being evidence-based. So, there’s a lot to unpack!

Curious about this topic too? Then join the #bookclub session tomorrow Tuesday August 27th at 6:30 PM CET. We’ll talk all things #menstruation and patriarchy :)

All genders are welcome, and you can join even if you haven’t read the book. The only condition is to come with an open mind and be kind. (Link in the comments)

P.S. I got this awesome bookmark from the Vagina Museum and it features a fun illustration by Alex Lyons. (@lyons.creative)

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗗𝗼 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹*𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘀 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻? → Most of it operates underground → We’re still trying to understand how it all works → No one really knows the why behind it, but activated the right way, it creates unforgettable experiences

Shall I continue the metaphor? 😃
