As I reflect on Labor Day, I am reminded of the ongoing struggle against human trafficking and its lasting impact on survivors. The story of Nomi, the namesake of Nomi Network, illustrates both the harsh realities and the resilience of human trafficking survivors.
Trafficked at just 7 years old, Nomi spent much of her life in a trafficking shelter's long-term unit, only recently returning to her family at age 26. The trauma she endured left her with a disability that continues to affect her ability to work. Yet, when I met Nomi last month in Cambodia, her spirit shone through despite the shadows of her past.
Over coffee, Nomi greeted me with a warm smile that belied her difficult journey. As we chatted, she shared her daily routines, hopes, and dreams with vibrant enthusiasm. Our conversation was a powerful reminder to me that with proper support, survivors can overcome their traumatic pasts and build brighter futures.
Organizations like Nomi Network play a crucial role in this process, committed to helping every woman and girl reach their full potential. Our work is essential, as the workplace can be particularly challenging for trafficking survivors, often triggering memories of their exploitation.
While we celebrate Labor Day and the protections many workers enjoy, it's crucial to remember that human trafficking remains a significant issue. As we enjoy Labor Day, let's commit to making every day count in the fight against human trafficking. By working together, we can create a world where all workers are treated with dignity and respect, and where survivors like Nomi can thrive and pursue their dreams. We will not stop until every woman and girl is free and reaches her full potential.
As we draw near to International Women's Day, a momentous occasion dedicated to honoring the remarkable contributions of women across the globe, I take this opportunity to commemorate the most profound influence in my life: my beloved grandmother Emma. She peacefully departed last year shortly after celebrating her remarkable 108th birthday.
She entered the world in the early 1900s, amidst the shadows of foot binding, a centuries-old brutal Chinese custom designed to constrain the potential of women. Despite her father's stature as a prosperous businessman with holdings akin to modern-day banks across China, he defied convention by steering her toward education. She embarked on a journey through boarding school and college, ultimately immersing herself in the realm of music as her chosen field of study. In her twenties, she endured the invasion of China and WWII, weathered the tumultuous Chinese Civil War, and witnessed the brutal ascent of Communism in her homeland. Faced with the imminent threat of persecution and death, she and my grandfather were compelled to flee to Hong Kong and then the United States for safety. What deeply moves me about my grandmother is her rock solid character and generous heart, even in amidst adversity. Despite being born into wealth and privilege, she endured the harrowing experience of losing everything upon fleeing to America. Throughout this tumultuous journey, her unwavering character shone brightly, and her faith grew exponentially, fueled by the miraculous experiences that simply kept her alive.
Amidst her trials, she stood as a shining example of generosity and love, spreading her kindness not just to her loved ones, but also to strangers. One memory that remains vivid is her warm invitation to a homeless elderly man, welcoming him into her home for our Christmas party. Her life was a testament to living fully and loving wholeheartedly, with her passion for travel and devotion to singing hymns in her local church serving as cherished highlights. She has left an indelible mark on my life, serving as a profound inspiration and the driving force behind my commitment to enabling women to realize their full potential. Grandmother, your enduring legacy of love and service lives on through me, inspiring and guiding my path.
