No matter where you go, you should never forget where you came from! 🌅

And that was why when I was asked to guest lecture at my Alma mater, #universityofarizona, I jumped at the chance! It was an absolute honor and privilege to speak to seniors in the Media & Thinking class in the Information Sciences college. A huge thank you to #mediavillage legend, Jack Myers, for inviting me!

I shared with the class some wisdom I wish someone had told me when I was sitting in their seats in gasp 1996. I was reminded what important lessons they are, in business and in life. SO, please indulge me while I share a few of them with you here in the hopes I might inspire some action in you….

  1. 🎭 Imposter syndrome is a thing for everyone at some point - sometimes you really do have to fake it until you make it, everyone will feel like a fraud in the job they are doing, just keep going, you know more than you give yourself credit for!
  2. 🤝 Network, network, network! - Keep your linkedin profile up to date, & the network ever growing. Personalize invitations and unsolicited reach outs. Provide recommendations when asked, but also continue to ask for reco’s. *Pro tip: create a 30 minute block on calendar monthly to reach out to 2 people you don’t know, be it from a company you like/admire, an industry you are trying to break into, a professional body, or internally
  3. ⭐️ Get a mentor, and then become a mentor - A mentor may only be for a point in time, or it could be ongoing, but find people who you aspire towards, who will challenge you, who will teach you something. And then, pay it forward and become a mentor.  *Pro tip: Be prepared for mentor meetings: what do you want to get out of them, make them actionable, not just a ‘chit chat’
  4. 🧠 Invest in yourself, professionally and ongoing - Continue to hone your craft, as well as finding new areas that interest you (hello, AI!). LI Learning has tons of great free classes (I was not paid for this advertisement!). *Pro tip: block 60 minutes on your calendar monthly to force yourself into this practice
  5. 🗣️ Always take the interview, even when you aren’t looking - it keeps you sharp, it can reaffirm where you are currently working, or help you remember your worth, etc. It doesn’t mean the grass is always greener, but it is a good practice to be in!
  6. ↔️ Lateral moves can be worthwhile and provide growth - It doesn’t always have to be a promotion to be good for your growth and career but find yourself in ‘doing’ roles. Be the person who makes shit happen, be a doer.
  7. 😬Step outside your comfort zone (often) - It is hard to do, but this is where growth and change comes from. A mentor once told me you stop learning when you get comfortable so take risks & stay curious
  8. 🐝 Bee kind, & don’t burn bridges - It is SO much easier to be nice to people, not because of who they are or who they may be some day, but show people courtesy because you don’t know the challenges they are facing
