I was in Dortmund, Germany last week at a very moving ceremony for my husband’s father, aunt, uncle and grandparents, who were arrested by the Nazis and deported from their home in October 1938. Some 17,000 Jewish people were arrested in Germany in this particular deportation.
The three children were eventually able to come to England in August 1939. My husband’s grandparents were tragically killed in 1942 – we don’t know exactly where.
These brass memorials, known as Stolpersteine, were designed and created by the German artist Gunter Demnig. Last week he placed them in the pavement in front of the house the family lived in.
We were also privileged to see the travelling exhibition on this deportation, currently at Dortmund’s former Gestapo Prison, which features the story of my husband’s family.
This is a more personal post than usual but I wanted to highlight the incredible work that Gunter and the people at the Stolpersteine project do, as well as the wonderful people we met there- including Dr Alina Bothe, the expert on the Polenaktion deportations, Dr Markus Guennewig, director of the prison museum (the Steinwache), and local historian Dr Rolf Fischer.
