I never really grasped the saying, "Perfection is the Enemy of Progress," until a chat with my wife en route to the gym this morning.

She shared, "A friend's coworker got fired because he repeatedly messed up the measurements for furniture installation."

Puzzled, I wondered, "How can someone mess up something so straightforward? Was he aiming for 'good enough' to finish faster?"

Her response was simple, "I don't know."

Reflecting on my approach, mainly when tidying our apartment, I admitted, "You always do a thorough job, unlike me." She concurred with my self-assessment of being the messier one. Curious, I asked her about her strategy when doing something so simple as cleaning the apartment.

Her philosophy was straightforward: "I aim to do it so well that I don't have to do it again."

This insight struck me as I entered the gym, pondering, "How can I work out effectively enough not to repeat it for a week?"

Similarly, I contemplated, "What's needed to minimize back-and-forth with colleagues?"

The concept of perfection, often seen as a spectrum, tends to slide towards leniency over time as we adjust our standards of 'good enough' downwards.

In contrast, the mindset of 'doing it right the first time' is clear-cut and binary.

Viewing life through the lens of cost can be limiting.

Let's examine your relationship with price.

Two kinds of people often cross my path:

  1. Those who compare prices, and
  2. Those who avoid them.

Are you the type to declare, "I pay $290 for my Equinox membership; what you're asking is too expensive for me!"

Or do you scoff at a $4 coffee, confident you could make it at home?

Comparison and avoidance are effective strategies for financial health.

But trouble arises when these filters disqualify valuable experiences that could significantly enrich your life.

Consider introducing a third strategy: value.

Ask yourself, "What value will this add to my life?"

Imagine being accustomed to expenses under $200 (like weekend dinners, gym, and gas), and a stranger offers you a deal that costs $1000.

That's 5x your usual budget.

But they promise a 90% chance you'll gain benefits worth $10000.

Cost = $1’000.  Benefit = $10’000.

Would you pay?

Likely not.

You're so anchored to the cost that you ignore the potential value.

Many of us are so fixated on comparing or avoiding costs that we miss out on transformative opportunities.

In conclusion, our perception of life - be it through a cost or value lens - profoundly influences our decision-making.

By shifting our perspective to value over cost, we can unveil new pathways for growth and uncover opportunities that would otherwise stay hidden.
