Professor in Battery and Energy System Research at RWTH Aachen University

Dirk Uwe Sauer is a highly accomplished individual with a background in physics, electrochemistry, and electrical engineering, dedicating almost three decades to research in battery energy storage and renewable energy systems.

As a professor at RWTH Aachen University, he leads a team of over 70 employees, focusing on the intricate understanding of batteries, developing models for digital twins, conducting post-mortem analyses to uncover ageing effects, and creating diagnostic algorithms to predict battery performance, ageing conditions, and safety, with a strong emphasis on utilizing data-driven machine learning techniques.

His work extends to integrating battery storage solutions in various mobile applications like cars, buses, ships, trains, as well as in stationary grid applications for tasks such as frequency stabilization, balancing power fluctuations from renewable sources, ensuring uninterruptible power supplies, and facilitating energy trading.

Dirk is actively involved in managing a 5 MW battery plant that engages in daily auctions for primary control power on the electricity exchange, showcasing tangible applications of his research.

Currently spearheading the establishment of the 'Center for Ageing, Reliability and Lifetime Prediction for Electrochemical and Power Electronic Systems (CARL)' with a substantial investment of 110 million euros, he consistently contributes to the advancement of battery technology and energy systems.

Besides his role as a professor, Dirk Uwe Sauer holds key positions in prestigious organizations and projects, including leading the central interdisciplinary policy advisory initiative 'Energy Systems of the Future (ESYS)' involving prominent national science academies to address crucial aspects of the energy transition ('Energiewende').

His educational journey comprises studying Electromechanics and Physics, culminating in a doctoral degree from Universität Ulm and engaging in impactful research roles at various renowned institutions.
