Do referrals matter?

Well, yes and no. A referral does bump you up in the list. The referrer is basically telling the company that this person s/he is referring would be great for this role. Even better, if they can vouch for you directly to the Hiring Manager.

But how often do you find someone who is willing to refer + personally vouch for you right when you are in search of a new job? The answer might surprise you.

Speaking from experience, many would want to help you, and many would actually come to you & say that they would refer you – but would take weeks to actually provide the referral. By that time, the role might not even be accepting applications anymore.

What should you do in that case?

[1] Network your way through the interview process.

Find other employees at the company, or the specific team you’re interested in. Learn about the team goals and how it aligns with your experiences & goals.

[2] Build and maintain relationships.

Once you've chosen a company you want to pitch yourself to, don’t just shoot out a cold email. Do your research, and identify the key players you want to build relations with.

Key players have the power to connect you, & if they do, you’re much more likely to get a response than if you were to reach out cold. Once you find some connections to you wish to reach out to, it’s time to request for an informational interview.

[3] Nail your informational interview.

Research. Learn as much as you can about the person you’d be talking to. You can make the most out of these contacts if you build relations around shared values. Don’t ask open ended questions like how you can get a job at the company. Ask specific & interesting questions such as: a. What types of decisions would you be making? b. Whom will you be working most closely with? c. Why is the team looking to fill up this position?

Remember that you are the driver of these conversations. So come prepared for the informational interviews.

As you are about to wrap up the conversation, politely ask if they would be willing to refer you or get you in touch with the hiring manager of the position you’re interested in.

[4] Informational interview with the Hiring Manager.

Here, your job is to make sure that you are armed with the knowledge of what the team is looking for. You need to convince the HM that you are the right candidate for this role by tying your experiences with what the team’s requirements are. Make it clear how you can contribute towards the team’s goals, and how this will help you grow.

Proactively reaching out to hiring managers will give you more advantages over other applicants. Hopefully, by the end of this step, you’d have landed yourself an interview.

In conclusion, referrals are important. But if you can’t get one on time, you should not give up. There are several things you can do to pitch yourself directly to the employer!

What other steps would you want to add to make the process more efficient?
