🛑 The Unforeseen Costs of Free Work: Why did 3 offers with a non-profit not happen when I was looking for an internship? 🛑
Entering the development sector for my master's degree internship was a fascinating shift. Coming from a for-profit environment, I wasn't expecting a red-carpet welcome, and I was eager to gain experience through an unpaid internship. My university also offered excellent support in connecting students with employers, but I ended up encountering some structural challenges on the market.
🟡 Non-profit A: Hidden Cost. I was offered an unpaid on-site position with a global research non-profit in Africa. The scope was intriguing, and the manager sounded great, but I couldn’t afford 100% of the expenses for flight, accommodation, and food, so I had to decline this opportunity. Conclusion? Professionals are excluded due to financial limitations, potentially hindering the diversity of their intern pool.
🟡 Non-profit B: Bureaucratic Blocker. Another unpaid remote (!) opportunity closely aligned with my career aspirations in private sector development. Unfortunately, the team's budget didn't allow for an internal fee associated with the HR document processing, despite strong alignment with the hiring manager. Conclusion? The non-profits face budgetary and operational constraints even for free remote positions.
🟡 Non-profit C: Missing Onboarding. I had a positive conversation with a hiring manager at a non-profit in the Global South, which I dreamt of working with. However, communication stalled after a verbal offer, leaving no clear scope of work or contract after a month. This lack of a structured onboarding process raised red flags about the support for new hires. Conclusion? Communication is key; efficient onboarding is crucial, especially in an intense work environment.
This internship search process has been a valuable learning journey, offering a unique perspective on the development sector. It's evident that fostering a robust pipeline of local talent is essential for the sector's long-term success. Additionally, increasing financial resources for non-profits would enable them to attract and retain top talent. Streamlining operational processes can also make the sector more accessible to passionate individuals seeking to contribute, regardless of their financial circumstances.
This experience has equipped me with a deeper understanding of the sector's complexities. I'm eager to apply these insights as I pursue a career in development, working towards innovative solutions that address the systemic barriers hindering the sector's progress.

🇺🇳🚀My first international consulting project! I'm partnering with the UNDP to lead the measurement and evaluation of their projects worldwide.
🧳For the past two years, I've been actively building my "portfolio career" – exploring diverse opportunities outside the traditional 9-to-5 job. This has included teaching marketing and public policy, mentoring startups and professionals, and co-founding an urban development firm.
🥁Leveraging my Master's from Columbia | SIPA, this UNDP project marks my debut on the international stage! I'm thrilled to apply my expertise in sustainable development, evaluating the impact of UNDP projects around the world, and contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) towards a more equitable future.
