Why Startups Shouldn't Fuss About Branding at the Beginning

Recently, someone commented that our startup Aiter's logo is rubbish. And the design too. I absolutely agree with them. In some ways, that was the plan. We generated the logo using AI in 5 minutes. The website was cobbled together based on an old startup design and open templates, in a couple of days. The copy was hastily written, with attention mainly paid to the first screen. Why?

Because a startup's primary focus should be testing the hypothesis about the product's value. A startup should always be an #innovation. Ideally, one that solves a problem 10+ times more effectively than existing solutions. Take ChatGPT, for instance - at the start, they didn't fuss much about design or logo, and it's unlikely to be their main focus even now.

Aiter doesn't offer a 10x innovation, perhaps 2-3x for now. But we're working on increasing this coefficient. So currently, the main job of our logo and website is simply to exist. Our focus is on data collection, testing product hypotheses, and an iterative approach to development.

We now have 11.5k users and some MRR, and we have only started to think about the website and #marketing. As for branding, I reckon that's still a long way off.

If people are paying even for a product with a dodgy logo and website - it means the product itself has potential. Consequently, the lack of branding is, in a way, even an advantage for product testing.

When is branding needed? In established markets with competition, where you need to compete not just with the product, but also with story, emotion, packaging. That's why Nike has such huge #advertising budgets. Or for #startups at the scaling stage, with an established Product-Market Fit.

For startups in early stages, fussing about branding is often a waste of time and money.

p.s. The picture seems relevant to me as it shows the true "lean" approach to a product.

Here is a clever hack for working with #AI that helps with any task.

At the start of the AI hype, everyone was saying that prompt engineering was the profession of the future. Loads of courses were launched, along with coaches, success architects, prompt marketplaces, and so on.

But the authors of this article think differently (link in the comments). They refer to research showing that when AI acts as a prompt engineer, it's already more effective than a human prompt engineer.

I've seen this for myself. Though I'm far from being a professional, I can still give fairly precise briefs for #marketing. But it turned out better when I asked Claude to write a prompt for me. Although it's not always perfect - often you need to remove the excess.

So, here's the hack. Before writing a prompt, I write "Act as the best prompt engineer in the world. Improve the prompt below prompt text". As a result, you get a detailed prompt that's easy to fine-tune for your request. And then you can use it.

P.S. I made the image by asking the AI to be a visual #prompt engineer for this post.
