Highlights
At the end of April I fulfilled one of my long standing ambitions by setting up a Kids Gardening Club as part of the wider biodiversity project. Since then over 50 children, their parents & grandparents and volunteers of all ages have transformed a disused and closed off lawn, into a thriving community wildlife garden buzzing with life, always full of visitors and bursting with home grown produce.
It sounds like a sweeping overstatement - but I would genuinely say that it has been transformative - for me, for the kids, for the local community - bringing people of all ages together with a common purpose, for the common good. And it is truly heart warming to see the kids learning how to look after nature, gardening skills and building great relationships with our wonderful (often older) volunteers - and I never thought I would see kids fighting over who gets to eat all the vegetables that they grew themselves.
As one visiting ecologist said - if the kids were in charge of government, then we would certainly not be facing such a national biodiversity crisis!
Some volunteers made this fantastic short video which gives some idea of what we have been up to. And there are too many helpers, donors and good people to thank one by one, but a special shout out to Louisa Rose, who has also unlocked a new passion, mostly for sign making, and the unstoppable Rev Em Koltveit, who gave us the land, provides an epic tea each week and is our number 1 advocate.
