Leaving a board meeting recently, the subject of the importance of mentors came up. At some point, all of have had that mentor that took the time to help you make progress against your aspirations. They took the time to teach, motivate and hold you accountable. One thing though we seldom do though, is thank our mentors along the way. I wanted to remedy that in a series of posts to thank my mentors—those supervisors, peers, functional experts and others who helped me along the way.

In my case my early career at Johnson and Johnson provided a series of supervisors that were so fundamental to my development. They were challenging, demanding yet supportive —-they through example and coaching pushed you to develop into a better version of yourself. In so many companies with highly talented and competitive people, it is rare that you come across talented supervisors that seemed more interested in your development than theirs. I had many but wanted to call out four. They were in no particular order: Jim Lenehan, Brian Perkins, Tony Vernon and Colleen Goggins. A very different group of people—but they were all outstanding leaders, business people who took the time to make all the people around them better.

The purpose of the post is to in some small way thank them. I would also hope that people reading may reach out and thank their mentors along the way—-adding a little positivity in a crazy world. More to come.

This week I had the privilege of working with Jes Christian, Reggie Brooks and Matt Weldy to kick of the Notre Dame Monogram Club Member to Member Podcast program. We had a excellent discussion around race and Covid 19. Jes and Reggie really helped give me so much perspective on the sometimes difficult conversations about race and where do we go from here. A great way for the Notre Dame Monogram Club to work to be a small part of a solution. To listen: https://link.in/eXDV6mp #notredame #monogramclub #eraextended
