I'm using ChatGPT to help me get to grips with react coding. As a design systems lead in a previous role, I had a team of devs to build this stuff out. Anyone who knows me, knows I have strong views on the way that design and dev need to work hand in glove on components. That means knowing a bit more about how it works. I did have a couple of attempts at this, but I relied on the goodwill of developers to help me get simple stuff running. So I fired up ChatGPT and started with a simple prompt ...

"help me build a react ui component library. You can start by telling me how to set up the code folders".

In a couple of hours I had a working storybook instance with some components (screenshot below). Now, ChatGPT doesn't have access to the files or terminal, so I've had to cut and paste from the outputs. It didn't work at all at first , but by pasting the errors and the console logs into the prompt, I entered a discussion which eventually ended up with the project thus far. Its like having an infinitely patient coding buddy who doesn't mind how many stupid questions you ask. And I'm learning a lot by reading the code and the comments from ChatGPT. My dev chums need not worry, I'm way off production ready - but at least I'll understand a bit more about this.

So - Figma Font variables... Definitely a good step forward, but would be a lot easier if you start by building your font styles with the variables rather than retro fitting them. Struggling to locate guidance on letter spacing settings as the variable doesn't support decimal fractions, negative values or percentages. I hope someone can enlighten me. Some of the finer styling options that can be created in code using text-transform aren't here yet, so you'll have to bury the all caps and underlines styles in the styles dialogue boxes. What is nice is the ability to change up your whole system style by switching the font master tokens and see it cascade through the font styles. Something you can do in code but not that easy in a design tool.
