There are some thinkers where, if you vehemently disagree with them… just wait. You may find yourself nodding in agreement down the road.

It also works the other way around.

Some of the most influential voices change their minds in public. Boldly. Without apology.

It can be disorienting to watch. Unless you know your own mind.

Unless you know your values.

Then you can observe their evolution without needing to follow it. You can hold the tension. Stay open. But stay grounded.

There's freedom in that.

"𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗜 𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂? I almost didn't get my first job as a recruiter because my would-be boss, the founder of a startup recruiting firm, didn't think I had the right personality to be a recruiter.

I told him, “Because I’m tenacious.”

What he was really looking for was 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿. And in his world, hunger looked different. Louder, with more bravado.

Mine looked like persistence. Grit. Quiet fire.

He tentatively hired me and I was consistently one of his top billers.

When I returned to visit his thriving firm years later, he told me (with a wink): “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜 𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆.”

That’s why I’m cautious when I hear the phrase: “𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝘁.”

Are you sure that’s not code for “they made us uncomfortable”?

Sometimes the concern is valid—early teams need to be aerodynamic. There isn’t always space for friction, and speed matters.

But when “culture fit” becomes shorthand for “they weren’t like us,” you risk missing great people.

In the name of comfort, teams often hire for sameness— when what they really need is alignment.

The best hires don’t always blend in. They 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 the culture. They 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵 the thinking. They 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀—even if their expression looks different.

That’s what values alignment really means.
