"Perception is reality." 😤

I don't think there has been a saying I have heard more often in the Business Development world that has frustrated me as much as this one. Statements like this heap shame and promote assumption-based leadership environments.

The message that this phrase conveys: "YOU (team member) must begin to worry about what the rest of the team thinks YOU are doing. Please make it YOUR job to cover up others' assumptions. If you weren't already, please begin looking over your shoulder, daily, to be worried that someone thinks you aren't working hard enough."

Just the type of thing you want team members to think/feel, right?? 😅

📝 Before making a statement like this to your team, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I want my team to feel ashamed or empowered?
  • Am I assuming the best of my team? (It is surprising how often "Assume the best" is a value at companies where statements like "Perception is reality" thrive. Bit of an oxymoron. 🤔)
  • Am I advocating for my team well to others?
  • Am I worried that I am not controlling enough? (Truth 💣: on your best days, the only thing you can control is yourself.)
  • Is this something I could take on to cover my team well?

I am thankful to have leaders like Suzi Gaiser, Riley Fike, and Jary Carter who care deeply about assuming the best, advocating for our department, and teaching others to do the same. Btw, we are always hiring at Automattic. If you see a position that sounds interesting, DM me. 😁
