Jun 2020, when SG was in the throes of COVID-19, SG Digital Office (SDO) was set up by IMDA. Its mission: teach digital skills to especially the seniors, to ensure that no one is left behind.
This month, we celebrate the 4th anniversary of SDO. From scratch, the SDO team, past and present, worked hard, training over 280,000 seniors since its inception.
Words cannot describe how much I am immensely inspired by both the resilience of especially our seniors and pre-seniors to learn digital skills, and the dedication of SDO + their digital ambassadors and Silver Information Wellness Ambassadors. SIWAs are mostly past seniors trained by SDO who now want to train others and play it forward.
In Jan 2024, IMDA pivoted and rolled out the Digital Skills for Life (DSL). DSL comprises 5 competencies necessary for daily living tasks (such as how to find info, communicate and transact online; and how to stay safe, smart and kind online). DSL was developed, after we piloted it on the ground through SDO with over 16,000 learners last year. IMDA developed DSL resource materials in English and non-English languages. The public can learn DSL through SDO or the website for our national movement, Digital for Life (DfL). We also welcome DfL partners to contribute content for DSL, and co-train with SDO. https://lnkd.in/g9rZwUKb
Building an inclusive society requires forging a lot of collaboration. We constantly look out for and welcome such ground-up efforts, such as the efforts by Singapore Computer Society Youth Chapter recently.
One such newly forged collaboration is with Google to bring Gemini Academy's content to the public. Originally designed for teachers, SG will be the first country where the Gemini Academy's content will be extended beyond the classrooms to the public. IMDA will take reference from the Academy's Gen AI content, in our update of DSL resources. Do also watch out for Gen AI workshops we are working with Google Gemini Academy to roll out in 2024 at National Library Board libraries.
I want to end by sharing SDO's recent Partner of the Labour movement recognition at National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) May Day 2024. SDO has been working with National Taxi Association to teach the taxi drivers digital skills for daily living. You can check out my post about a year ago on one such session. Indeed, taxi uncles and aunties have served Singaporeans through the decades and continue to serve us. We will not leave them behind.
Happy 4th birthday, SDO! Thank you!
