Dori Maynard
Dori J. Maynard was an American journalist, writer, and advocate for diversity in journalism who passed away on February 24, 2015, at the age of 56.13 She served as the president of the Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education in Oakland, California, from 2001 until her death.13
Born on May 4, 1958, in Brooklyn, New York, Maynard was the daughter of journalist Robert C. Maynard.1 She graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont with a BA in American History in 1982.1 Maynard worked as a reporter for several newspapers, including The Patriot Ledger in Quincy, Massachusetts, the Detroit Free Press, and the Bakersfield Californian.12
In 1993, Dori and her father became the first father-daughter duo to be named Nieman fellows at Harvard University.13 She joined the Maynard Institute in 1994 and became its president in 2001.1 Throughout her career, Maynard was a tireless advocate for diversity in newsrooms and accurate representation of minorities in the media.34
Maynard co-authored "Letters to My Children," a compilation of her father's nationally syndicated columns, for which she wrote introductory essays.1 She received numerous accolades for her work, including the Asian American Journalists Association's Leadership in Diversity Award in 2008.1
