One man walked through one door tonight at 0020 with his wife and daughter. Doesn't seem to be newsworthy to many people, but to him it may make all the difference in the world because that was a door into Hamid Karzai International Airport.
Let me tell you what got him there. One Marine officer (now a civilian) from a decade ago who had not forgotten the attacks he endured who did paperwork, yes paperwork, to help get him a new home. A USAF officer and a US Army SpecOps Officer who did paperwork, yes paperwork, to make sure he was cleared. An active duty US Marine who contacted a congressional staffer, a civilian, who did paperwork, yes paperwork, to put him on another list that should mean he and his family are manifested.
They didn't do this because it was in anyone's job description. They did it because it was, simply, the right thing to look after someone who is now an alien in his own country, who doesn't want his wife to become a widow or daughter who never feels the sun on her face.
Some I knew as a cadet at The Citadel , some as an active duty officer in the United States Marine Corps, some as a reserve officer at Columbia Business School some I met as fellow travelers who are just trying to do the right thing. They don't get called superheroes, but I am so proud to call these men my friends, my colleagues, and my brothers in more ways than one.
I would like to call you a friend, a colleague, a brother too. If you want to be one of the people who acts, who runs towards, instead of away, from the sound of the guns. Then let me point you to a resource that another Marine pointed out to me.
